AIA cheers on UNM women's basketball team in MWC tournament, advance to semifinals

The UNM women’s basketball team began its quest for their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2008 last night in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Lobos defeated San Diego State, 63-60, to advance to their second-straight Mountain West Conference Tournament semifinals. This is the 16th time in the 23 year-history of the conference, that the UNM women’s basketball team is in the semifinals.

The UNM women’s basketball team finished the regular season with a 24-8 record and finished second in the MWC, 14-4, which notched the second over seed in the tournament.

Lobo senior guard Jaedyn De La Cerda led the way with stout defensive play, but she did play a major factor with some sharp shooting.

De La Cerda, who poured in a game-high 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting and 4-of-10 from 3-point range.

At the MWC postgame press conference, De La Cerda said she gained confidence against the Aztecs with some of the early shots she hit.

“I’m playing with my teammates,” she told reporters. “Just going out there and attacking the basket. You can’t go out there and be scared of taking shots.”

The Lobos will face the Colorado State Rams tonight in the Mountain West Conference semifinals in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center. Tip is set for 8:30 p.m.

UNM swept the season series against CSU and the winner of will face either UNLV or Air Force in the championship game on Wednesday.
